Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung announced his commitment to transforming the artificial intelligence (AI) industry into South Korea's next-generation growth engine through strategic investment. Lee's ambitious plan aims to position South Korea among the world's top three AI powerhouses, a goal he unveiled during the launch of the National AI Strategy Committee. This committee, led by Lee, includes a standing vice chair, 34 private-sector members, and 13 ministers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee emphasized that South Korea is at a "historical turning point" where the nation must choose between remaining a follower or becoming a pioneering force in AI. He described the vision of becoming a leading AI nation as essential for South Korea's future survival and prosperity. Lee cautioned against the dangers of falling behind, which could result in technological dependence, industrial decline, and increased inequality.
During the committee's inaugural meeting, Lee presented four key strategies to advance the AI industry. He advocated for the creation of inclusive, human-centered AI that is accessible to all. The president pledged to make strategic government investments that would bolster the private sector and enhance global competitiveness. Additionally, Lee highlighted the necessity of reforming systems in administration, healthcare, and education to foster an "AI-friendly" society, proposing a system of "negative regulations" where activities are permitted unless specifically prohibited by law.
Lee also underscored the significance of developing AI-related industries, building essential infrastructure, and nurturing talent to ensure balanced regional growth. These efforts, he noted, are crucial to maintaining South Korea's competitive edge in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.
