Seoul: The planned departure of South Korean nationals detained in Georgia during a U.S. immigration sweep has faced unforeseen delays due to unspecified circumstances in the United States, as reported by the South Korean foreign ministry on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, over 300 South Korean workers were expected to board a chartered flight to return home on Wednesday, local time. This departure was contingent upon their release from a detention facility in Folkston, following their arrest during a significant U.S. immigration raid conducted last Thursday.
The foreign ministry communicated to reporters that the departure plans had become complicated due to U.S. circumstances, although it did not provide additional information on the nature of these circumstances. The ministry assured ongoing negotiations with U.S. authorities to expedite the return of the detained workers at the earliest opportunity.
In preparation for their return, a South Korean chartered aircraft had already departed for Atlanta earlier in the day, aiming to bring back the detained citizens as soon as the situation permits.
