Marine Corps Sergeant Fatally Shot at Incheon Unit

Incheon: A Marine Corps sergeant tragically died after being shot in the head at a military unit located on Daecheong Island, off South Korea's west coast. Military officials reported that the incident occurred Saturday, with the Marine found bleeding from his forehead before being pronounced dead around 9 a.m., prior to reaching a hospital.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain uncertain, with investigators exploring whether the discharge was accidental and if the bullet involved was live or a blank. A Marine official, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak publicly, confirmed that the Marine Corps military police and Incheon police are jointly conducting the investigation.

This incident marks the latest in a series of firearm-related tragedies within the military. Previously, on August 23, an Army sergeant first class committed suicide using his rifle at a front-line guard post. Shortly thereafter, on September 2, a captain at the Korea Army Academy in Yeongcheon also took his own life using a rifle.
