Seoul: Rep. Kweon Seong-dong of the main opposition People Power Party appeared before a special counsel team Thursday to undergo questioning for the first time since his arrest earlier this week. Kweon arrived at special counsel Min Joong-ki’s office after a court issued a warrant for his arrest Tuesday over allegations of receiving 100 million won (US$72,200) from Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja in 2022.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Min’s team is expected to question Kweon about his relationship with the church and allegations of receiving additional illegal political funds. Kweon, once seen as a key confidant of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, is accused of receiving 100 million won from a former Unification Church official in January 2022 ahead of the presidential election in March.
He was allegedly asked to provide support for the church in the event of Yoon’s election as president, in exchange for church member votes and financial backing. Yoon went on to win the election.
