South Korea Women’s Archery Triumphs at Sydney Olympics

Seoul: The South Korean women’s archery team clinched the gold medal in the group competition at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The team, comprising Kim Soo-nyung, Yoon Mi-jin, and Kim Nam-soon, outperformed the Ukrainian team with a score of 251-239.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon Mi-jin secured her second gold medal at these Olympics after also winning the women’s individual competition. Her teammates, Kim Nam-soon and Kim Soo-nyung, completed a podium sweep in the individual competition, taking silver and bronze, respectively.

In another significant development, during the 2005 six-party talks aimed at curbing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, North Korea agreed to dismantle its nuclear program, rejoin the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and allow monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The other participating nations, including South Korea, China, and Japan, committed to providing energy and a security guarantee to North Korea, along with promoting trade and economic exchanges. The United States and Japan also agreed to normalize relations with North Korea, and discussions about a light-water reactor were planned for a suitable time.

In a separate event, North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported in 2013 the completion of a new brewery in Haeju, a port city on the country’s southwestern coast.

In 2016, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck near Gyeongju in southeastern South Korea, marking an aftershock of two earlier earthquakes on September 12, which recorded magnitudes of 5.8 and 5.1. The initial quake was the strongest recorded near the Korean Peninsula since 1978.

In 2018, South Korea and North Korea signed an agreement to reduce military tensions between the two countries. This de facto nonaggression pact included the creation of land, air, and maritime buffer zones near the inter-Korean border. The agreement was signed during the third inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang from September 18-20, involving South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
