Changwon: The son of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, Lee Jee-ho, has embarked on a 10-week training program at the Naval Academy in Changwon, approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul. This marks the beginning of his journey to becoming a Navy officer after entering military service last week.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Jee-ho was among 83 naval officer candidates participating in a ceremony that inaugurated the training program. The 24-year-old, who was born in the United States in 2000, has renounced his U.S. citizenship to fulfill his military obligations in South Korea. His service will span a total of 39 months, inclusive of the training period.
Throughout the program, Lee will engage in a series of training activities, including combat swimming and marksmanship drills. Upon successful completion of the program, he is set to be commissioned as a Navy ensign on November 28. In his role, Lee is expected to serve as an interpreter.
In South Korea, mandatory military service is required of all able-bodied men for a minimum duration of 18 months.
