Busan: The Navy showcased its key military assets on Friday during a fleet review marking the 80th founding anniversary of the armed service. The event, held in waters off Busan, featured an array of military assets, including an 8,200-ton Aegis destroyer and a homegrown 3,000-ton submarine, highlighting the country's maritime strength.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this ceremony was the first of its kind since the international fleet review in 2018. The Jeongjo the Great destroyer served as the command ship, playing a central role in the demonstration of the country's maritime three-axis deterrence system. The fleet review included 31 warships, 18 aircraft, and unmanned surface ships and aircraft, emphasizing the technological advancements made by the Navy.
A P-8A maritime surveillance aircraft, known for its anti-submarine capabilities, fired 80 flares to commemorate the anniversary. The event also included demonstrations of anti-submarine and live-fire drills simulating enemy threats, reinforcing the Navy's operational readiness.
The ceremony highlighted assets developed with homegrown technology, aligning with South Korea's efforts to enhance arms exports. A Navy official stated that the event was organized to engage the public and raise awareness about maritime security and the country's vision for maritime strength.
Initially planned for May to coincide with the 80th anniversary of South Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, the event was postponed due to political issues stemming from former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed attempt to impose martial law. As a result, the event was scaled down to a domestic ceremony without foreign warships.
