Seoul: Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol has pledged comprehensive government support for the development of shipyards and drones utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) as part of efforts to foster the AI industry as the next-generation growth engine. Koo made this commitment during a meeting with executives from major companies in the shipbuilding and drone sectors, continuing his series of industry roundtables that have also included discussions with representatives from the robotics and automobile industries.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Koo emphasized the transformative potential of AI-driven innovation in shipbuilding and drones, stating that such advancements could significantly alter the current industrial landscape. He highlighted the rapid approach of the era of unmanned ships, underscoring the need for continued collaboration between the government and related companies to develop essential technologies. These include autonomous navigation systems and port connectivity platforms, with the aim of achieving fully autonomous vessels by 2030.
President Lee Jae Myung's administration has previously outlined a five-year economic development blueprint that designates AI as a central growth driver. This plan is part of a broader vision to cultivate a "super-innovation economy" propelled by cutting-edge technologies.
