Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun family mausoleum to pay respects to former leaders on the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), state media said Monday. The mausoleum is the resting place of Kim Il-sung, North Korea's founder and Kim's grandfather, as well as Kim Jong-il, a former leader and Kim's father.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim organized and guided the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the WPK in a responsible manner. He presented the achievements of the party and state to the former leaders, as stated by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The visit was part of a series of events, including a military parade attended by foreign dignitaries such as Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Vietnamese leader To Lam.
Kim emphasized the lasting impact of the former leaders' achievements, stating that their revolutionary exploits have laid a solid foundation for the country's development. He affirmed that as North Korea's socialist construction progresses, the country will continue to uphold these achievements without deviation. Kim also expressed his commitment to the prosperity of the DPRK and the ideals of the people.
Kim's visit to the mausoleum is part of a tradition, with previous visits made in 2015 and 2020 for the party's 70th and 75th founding anniversaries, respectively. DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the country's official name.
