Seoul: South Korea and the United States are reportedly on the brink of finalizing a significant tariff agreement that involves a substantial investment plan.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the negotiations revolve around South Korea's proposal to invest up to $350 billion over the next decade, with an annual investment of $30 billion as part of a phased plan.
The investment discussions have reached their final stage, with South Korean-language newspapers such as the Donga Ilbo and Hankook Ilbo highlighting the potential for this investment to be disbursed in Korean won. This move could potentially lead to a breakthrough in the ongoing tariff negotiations between the two nations.
Kyunghyang Shinmun and Seoul Shinmun report that the anticipation of a tariff deal is high, with South Korea's chief policy aide expressing optimism about the outcome. The proposed deal aims to ease tariff tensions between the countries and bolster economic cooperation.
Meanwhile, other developments in South Korea include the potential state visits of Donald Trump and Xi Jinping during the APEC summit, as reported by Chosun Ilbo. In addition, the JoongAng Ilbo highlights Cambodia's plans to deport 59 South Koreans involved in online job scams.
The Korea Economic Daily notes that the KOSPI index has hit 3,748 as a result of the positive outlook on the tariff talks. This reflects growing confidence in South Korea's economic prospects amidst these crucial negotiations.
