Seoul: The body of a South Korean student, who was reportedly tortured to death by a criminal organization in Cambodia, will undergo an autopsy in the Southeast Asian country next week, the Korean National Police Agency announced.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the agency plans to dispatch police investigators to Cambodia to attend the autopsy, aiming to determine the cause and circumstances of the student's death. Two officers from the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency are set to leave for Cambodia as early as this weekend to participate in the autopsy procedure. They intend to closely examine the cause of death, the method of crime, and the presence of any external injuries.
The student was discovered dead on August 8 near Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province, a location where employment scams and detentions targeting South Koreans and foreigners have been frequent. The South Korean Consulate in Cambodia reportedly informed the student's bereaved family earlier this week that the autopsy is likely to take place on October 20 or 21.
The autopsy will be conducted by a forensic pathologist from the National Forensic Service, and its findings will be shared with domestic investigative agencies through an official notification process. After the autopsy, the student's body will be cremated and repatriated to South Korea.
