Seoul: Around 1,000 to 2,000 South Korean nationals are believed to be involved in scam operations in Cambodia, the spy agency told lawmakers Wednesday. This revelation comes in the wake of a series of job scams that have led to the abduction and detention of South Koreans in the country.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a key suspect in the killing of a Korean university student in Cambodia was also confirmed to be an accomplice linked to the ringleader behind a major drug case in Seoul's Gangnam district in 2023. Lawmakers cited this information from a closed-door briefing by the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The NIS further reported that among the 3,075 suspects arrested by Cambodian police in connection with these scams between June and July this year, 57 were South Koreans. These developments highlight a growing concern over the involvement of South Korean nationals in criminal activities abroad, prompting closer scrutiny and cooperation between South Korean and Cambodian authorities.
