Pyongyang: North Korea announced a successful test of two hypersonic projectiles, marking a significant advancement in its weapons system aimed at bolstering the nation's war deterrence capabilities. The projectiles, launched from the Ryokpho District in Pyongyang, accurately struck a target at Kwesang Peak in Orang County, located in North Hamgyong Province, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
According to Yonhap News Agency, the test, which took place the previous day, was conducted by North Korea's Missile Administration as part of a broader defense capability development program. This program focuses on enhancing the sustainability and effectiveness of the country's strategic deterrence against potential threats. South Korea's military reported that North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles northeastward at around 8:10 a.m., covering a distance of approximately 350 kilometers.
Military sources indicated that the tested weapons might have been the Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 tactical ballistic missiles, previously tested by North Korea in September last year. These missiles reportedly landed inland rather than in the East Sea. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was notably absent from the test, with Pak Jong-chon, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), and other officials overseeing the launch.
Pak Jong-chon emphasized that the new weapon system demonstrates North Korea's commitment to enhancing its self-defensive technical capabilities. He highlighted the strategic value of the tested system, reaffirming the country's resolve to strengthen its war deterrence and self-defense measures.
This missile launch is the first such activity since South Korean President Lee Jae Myung assumed office in June and marks the first ballistic missile test in approximately five months. The timing of the launch is notable, occurring about a week before South Korea is set to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, with key global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, expected to attend and engage in talks with President Lee.
