AWS and Meta Executives Discuss Future of AI at APEC 2025: Focus on Agentic and Wearable AI

Gyeongju: What could be the next step of artificial intelligence (AI), which is already rapidly transforming the world? According to executives from global tech giants Meta Platforms and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the answer lies in agentic and wearable AI.

According to Yonhap News Agency, "AI really does have the potential to change every single company, every single industry, and frankly, every single job out there in the world," AWS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Matt Garman said during a session on AI at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in the southeastern city of Gyeongju. APEC CEO Summit is the officially sideline event of the annual APEC leaders' summit.

Garman mentioned that companies have experienced lower-than-expected returns on their AI investments over the past couple of years, noting that "agentic AI" could provide a solution to this challenge. "AI agents have the ability to help you actually understand your business. They can make decisions for you and take action on your behalf," he explained, calling it a "completely game-changing" technology that goes beyond simple chat or summarization services provided by generative AI models.

The AWS chief said his company will continue expanding investment in AI infrastructure, building on the industry's rapid innovation, pledging US$40 billion investment across 14 APEC member economies, excluding the United States, by 2028. Earlier in the day, Garman met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to outline the company's plan to invest about $5 billion by 2031 to establish new AI data centers in the country.
