SEOUL: Acting President Choi Sang-mok on Thursday underscored the pivotal role of public officials as South Korea navigates through what he has described as an "unprecedentedly grave situation." His remarks came during a government ceremony commemorating the first trading day of the year, a mere week after he assumed interim leadership.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi addressed the nation, acknowledging the severe challenges that lie ahead for the Republic of Korea. "Although the new year has begun, the Republic of Korea is facing an unprecedentedly severe situation," he stated, emphasizing the critical importance of public officials during these tumultuous times. Choi pointed to recent domestic political upheavals as a source of significant public distress and anxiety.
Choi urged public officials to commit themselves to stabilizing the government swiftly. "To ensure the public does not worry and can continue their daily lives, all public officials must devote themselves wholeheartedly to stabilizing the government as quickly as possible," he asserted. His call to action comes amid political turbulence following the impeachment of acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.
The National Assembly, controlled by the opposition, voted to impeach Han on Friday, less than two weeks after he assumed office on December 14. Han had taken over from President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached for declaring martial law, further exacerbating the political instability in the country.
