Seoul: Acting President Han Duck-soo announced his commitment to addressing urgent national issues following his reinstatement, appreciating the Constitutional Court’s decision to dismiss his impeachment. This announcement comes as Han returns to office 87 days after the National Assembly’s impeachment vote, which was based on his alleged involvement in the suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law on December 3, among other reasons.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han emphasized his dedication to ensuring stable governance in line with the nation’s Constitution and laws during a national address. He highlighted his intent to focus on securing national interests amid the ongoing trade war, which has intensified following U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Han also stressed the importance of national unity as the country awaits the verdict on Yoon’s impeachment, noting the polarization among citizens.
Upon resuming his duties, Han was briefed on the ongoing wildfire relief efforts and instructed relevant authorities to intensify actions to combat the wildfires that have been affecting the nation since Friday. He also directed the defense ministry to enhance military readiness and the foreign ministry to strengthen diplomatic ties with the United States and other partner nations in the face of global uncertainties.
To mitigate the impact of social unrest due to prolonged political instability, Han urged the police to maintain heightened vigilance at outdoor rallies and take decisive action against illegal activities. Later, he presided over an emergency National Security Council meeting, emphasizing the need for comprehensive readiness to safeguard the citizens’ lives amid persistent threats from North Korea.
Han underscored the necessity of seamless cooperation between South Korea and its allies, particularly the United States, in executing diplomatic policies that serve the national interest. He also highlighted the inseparable nature of security and economic policies, advocating for interdepartmental collaboration to ensure South Korean companies have access to stable supply chains.
