Seoul: Bae Kyung-hoon, a prominent artificial intelligence (AI) strategist for LG Group, has been nominated as President Lee Jae Myung's first science minister. Known for his pivotal role in shaping AI strategies within the South Korean conglomerate, Bae's career highlights his significant contributions to the integration of AI in business operations.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Bae, aged 49, has played a crucial role as the head of LG AI Research, where he has been instrumental in crafting the group's medium- and long-term AI strategies. His efforts have been directed towards identifying viable business models and promoting collaboration among LG's diverse affiliates. Bae's journey began in 2006 at the Samsung Thales research institute, and he joined LG Group a decade later as a researcher and AI consultant at the LG Economic Research Institute.
From 2019 to 2020, Bae led the AI division at LG Sciencepark, focusing on the integration of AI technologies into the company's operations. He became the president of LG AI Research in 2020, overseeing projects like EXAONE Deep, a next-generation inference AI model targeted for commercialization and open-source distribution.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Bae has been an active participant in shaping national AI policies. He has served as an adviser to several key governmental bodies, including the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology, the National Artificial Intelligence Committee, and the National Data Policy Committee. Bae's academic credentials include a doctorate in electronic engineering from Kwangwoon University and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Southern University, underscoring his expertise in both technical and managerial domains.
