Seoul: A court has issued an arrest warrant for a truck driver in his 60s, accused of causing a fatal crash at a traditional market near Seoul. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 19 others. The Incheon District Court issued the warrant on Saturday, citing the risk of the driver fleeing.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the tragic accident took place at Jeil Market in Bucheon, located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Seoul, on Thursday. The driver, aged 67, drove his 1-ton truck through the market’s narrow passageway, leading to the casualties. Among the 21 affected, two were market vendors, while the remaining 19 were customers.
The driver reportedly suffers from Moyamoya disease, a rare vascular brain condition. During the police investigation, he initially claimed that his medical condition did not affect his driving capabilities. However, during the arrest warrant hearing, he allegedly admitted that although he had been medicated for the disorder, he had not recently sought treatment due to his work commitments.
Police investigations revealed, through the vehicle’s pedal dashcam, that the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal at the accident’s time. Authorities suspect that the incident was caused by this misoperation rather than a sudden acceleration.
