Seoul: With his club out of playoff contention, Doosan Bears interim manager Cho Sung-hwan is giving younger players a chance to shine as the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season winds down. Cho has recently made the decision to demote some veteran players to provide opportunities for promising minor league prospects.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Bears, currently in ninth place with a record of 56-70-6, have no chance of making it to the postseason, which is reserved for the top five teams. As a result, Cho has opted to bolster the team with fresh talent, rather than continue with underperforming veterans. Outfielders Jung Soo-bin and Kim Jae-hwan, both struggling with their batting this month, have been sent to the Futures League to make way for new players.
Cho explained his reasoning before the Bears’ home game against the Kiwoom Heroes at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. He noted the timing was perfect for the change, as the team prepares for five consecutive home games starting September 25. Cho expressed his hope that the veterans will return and contribute positively in the final stretch of the season.
One of the new faces joining the team is Chun Hyun-jae, a catcher-turned-outfielder, who is set to make his KBO debut at 26 years old. Originally a catcher in college, Chun transitioned to the outfield under Cho’s guidance. Chun has demonstrated impressive performance in the Futures League, boasting a .313 batting average over three seasons. Cho commended Chun’s adaptability and high baseball IQ, noting his effectiveness both offensively and defensively.
Chun, in a statement shared by the Bears, expressed his eagerness to adapt to the outfield role and his commitment to the game. He stated his ambition to be recognized as a hard-working player who excels in all areas of baseball.
