Bill Gates Discusses Philanthropy and Legacy on ‘You Quiz on the Block’

Seoul: Microsoft co-founder and global philanthropist Bill Gates has shared insights into his life, career, and philosophy during a guest appearance on the popular talk show "You Quiz on the Block."

According to Yonhap News Agency, the episode, hosted by comedians Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Se-ho, aired on tvN's Wednesday talk show, which is celebrated for featuring a wide range of guests, from everyday citizens to global superstars. During the interview, Gates attributed the start of his philanthropic work to his late mother, who often reminded him that "to whom much is given, much is expected." This piece of advice, which he noted is reflected in many religious texts, profoundly influenced his decision to dedicate his energy and talent to philanthropy after his career at Microsoft.

Gates explained his philosophy on wealth and family, highlighting his decision to donate the majority of his fortune to society instead of leaving it to his children. He stated his belief that his children should have the opportunity to earn their own money and forge their own paths, rather than inheriting a dynasty. This choice, he mentioned, allowed him to concentrate on important global challenges.

He recounted how he began to question fundamental issues, such as why children die and whether enough is being done to address such problems. Discovering the inadequacy of efforts in these areas motivated him to focus on these critical issues.

Throughout the discussion, Gates emphasized the significance of curiosity and lifelong learning. He shared that maintaining his curiosity and a willingness to learn has been instrumental in his achievements. He advised others to discover their strengths and adapt to the evolving demands of the modern world, underscoring the importance of lifelong learning to navigate changes in one's career.

Gates also touched on the subject of happiness, expressing fulfillment from problem-solving with his team and witnessing his children's growth. He shared that his children often educate him about their perspectives on the world, which he finds very fulfilling. Gates concluded by expressing gratitude for the happiness he derives from both his professional and personal life, noting that he feels incredibly fortunate for the experiences he has had.
