Phnom penh: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has expressed “deep regret” over the torture death of a South Korean national involved in an illegal online job scam in Cambodia. He has promised to intensify efforts to ensure the safety of South Koreans within the country.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Prime Minister Hun made these remarks during a meeting with a visiting South Korean government response team. The team, led by Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina, is in Phnom Penh to address the issue of violent organized crime affecting South Koreans in Cambodia. The Cambodian leader expressed his condolences and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
The incident involved a college student in his 20s who was found dead in southern Cambodia in August. He had allegedly been tortured while held captive by an online scam ring. The death has caused significant public outrage in South Korea, pushing the government in Seoul to take comprehensive measures to address the problem.
