Pyongyang: The Chinese Embassy in Pyongyang organized a reception to commemorate the 80th anniversary of what China regards as its triumph over Japan in World War II, with high-ranking North Korean officials among the guests, as reported by the North's state media on Thursday. The event, held on Wednesday, saw the presence of Choe Ryong-hae, the chairman of North Korea's parliamentary standing committee, along with Culture Minister Sung Jong-gyu, vice ministers from the foreign and external economy ministries, and other notable officials, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
According to Yonhap News Agency, China recognizes September 3 as the anniversary of its victory against Japan in 1945, marking the end of World War II. During the reception, Chinese Ambassador Wang Yajun highlighted the historical ties between North Korea and China, describing them as "blood-forged" through revolutionary struggles. He reaffirmed China's commitment to safeguarding and further strengthening the traditional friendship between the two nations.
In alignment with this message, North Korea's culture minister expressed a similar sentiment in his speech, committing to collaborate with Chinese "comrades" to enhance bilateral relations. An official from South Korea's unification ministry noted that this event is indicative of the growing efforts by China and North Korea to restore their diplomatic relations, which had cooled as North Korea's ties with Russia deepened.
