Seoul: The Chinese Embassy in Seoul has formally requested the South Korean foreign ministry to bolster security measures in response to anti-China protest rallies occurring near the embassy, diplomatic sources disclosed on Thursday. The letter, sent through diplomatic channels, highlights concerns over ongoing protests fueled by unsubstantiated claims of Chinese interference in South Korea's elections.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this marks the first occasion the Chinese Embassy has issued an official complaint regarding anti-China demonstrations in general. Previously, the embassy had only sent a formal letter when an incident involving a supporter of the former President Yoon Suk Yeol occurred. In February, the individual, dressed as "Captain America," attempted to breach the embassy premises.
Following the embassy's request, the South Korean foreign ministry has officially urged the police to increase their vigilance concerning the protests. The embassy has also taken to social media to alert of potential violence from protesters in the Myeongdong area, where the embassy is located, and has asked for additional measures to safeguard Chinese nationals in the region.
