Seoul: The Seoul High Court On Tuesday rejected former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun's request to overturn a bail decision granting him release under strict conditions. Kim had challenged the decision, arguing that the imposed conditions would effectively keep him under arrest and infringe upon his basic rights.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim filed the appeal last week after the Seoul Central District Court granted him conditional bail at the prosecution's request. The decision to grant bail was met with resistance from Kim, who sees it as a violation of his fundamental freedoms.
The former defense minister is expected to gain an unconditional release on Thursday, marking the end of his six-month arrest period. His arrest was linked to charges of insurrection and abuse of power connected to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
In a move aimed at preventing Kim's release, an independent counsel investigating the martial law attempt has brought additional charges against him, including obstruction of official duties. A hearing to discuss the extension of his arrest is scheduled for Wednesday.
