Defense Ministry to Trial Generative AI in Upcoming Freedom Shield Exercise

Seoul: The defense ministry announced plans to test its proprietary generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform during the upcoming major combined exercise with the United States scheduled for next month. This initiative marks the first use of the Generative Defense AI platform in the annual Freedom Shield exercise, aimed at assessing its potential application in wartime operations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry intends to explore the integration of its self-developed generative AI into actual command and control systems on a trial basis during the exercise. Feedback from users will be crucial in shaping further development of the AI platform.

The generative AI is being developed using general data rather than military secrets, with the goal of providing various services to support troops in administrative and other non-combat tasks. The Freedom Shield exercise, conducted annually around March, is a key component of the allies' strategy to remain prepared against North Korean military threats.
