Seoul: Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung officially registered his candidacy with the state-run election watchdog on Saturday for the upcoming June 3 presidential election, as confirmed by his officials. Lee, a former leader of the liberal DP, currently leads the polls as the strong front-runner.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee has been noted for his previous hard-line remarks regarding Japan and his support for stronger ties with China. However, in recent months, he has shown strong support for the U.S. alliance and a trilateral partnership with Japan, seemingly to appeal to middle-of-the-road voters. This shift in stance indicates Lee’s strategic maneuvering to broaden his appeal ahead of the election.
Attention is also turning towards former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who could potentially alter the dynamics of the upcoming election. Han has recently joined the People Power Party (PPP), suggesting a possible replacement of Kim Moon-soo as the party’s candidate. Such a move could introduce new variables into the electoral landscape.
In response to growing concerns over Lee’s safety, the Democratic Party has announced plans to establish a task force aimed at countering terror threats against him. Additionally, a separate unit within Lee’s campaign team, dedicated to enhancing security, will be formed. This unit will be led by former police officers who are now serving as lawmakers, addressing the party’s concerns about Lee’s safety amidst the heightened political climate.
