Democratic Party’s Lee Jae-myung Registers for Upcoming Presidential Election

Seoul: Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung officially registered his candidacy with the state-run election watchdog for the upcoming June 3 presidential election, as confirmed by his officials. Lee, the former liberal leader of the DP, is currently leading the polls as the front-runner in the race.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee has been known for his past hard-line stance against Japan and his support for fostering close ties with China. However, in recent months, he has shown strong support for the alliance with the U.S. and a trilateral partnership with Japan, likely aiming to attract middle-of-the-road voters.

Alongside Lee, five other candidates have registered for the election, including Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party and Kwon Young-kook of the Democratic Labor Party, as reported by the National Election Commission. The deadline for party candidates to register their candidacy with the state election committee is set for Sunday.

Attention is also on former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who has recently joined the People Power Party (PPP) and may replace Kim Moon-soo as the party’s candidate, potentially shifting the dynamics of the June election.

In response to increasing terror threats against Lee, the DP has announced a plan to establish a task force. Additionally, the party will create a dedicated unit within Lee’s campaign team to enhance security, led by former police officers who are currently lawmakers. The party has expressed significant concerns regarding Lee’s safety.
