Seoul: The Korean Peninsula has been covered by a double layer of high pressure, pushing up the maximum daily temperatures to 37 C in Seoul, Daejeon, and other parts of the country Friday, the state weather service said. On top of the dual influences of the North Pacific high and the Tibetan high, a hot and humid southeasterly wind has also been blowing into the peninsula, intensifying the heat waves across the country, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in the high-pressure zone, the air is compressed as it descends, leading to a hike in the temperatures. The KMA explained that the mercury rises further when the sky is clear and the sunlight shines down strongly. Seoul, Busan, the southern Jeju Island, and many other parts of the nation will continue to experience tropical nights, as the daytime fever does not subside even at night. The KMA forecasted that the heat waves will continue for the time being.
Daytime highs will range from 31 C to 37 C nationwide Friday, the agency said. Due to high humidity, the sensible temperatures in most areas will soar to around 35 C.
