Seoul: The Democratic Party (DP) on Tuesday made a public appeal, urging citizens to engage in early voting this week, as the presidential election is just a week away.
According to Yonhap News Agency, DP candidate Lee Jae-myung is scheduled to cast his vote in Seoul on Thursday, marking the beginning of the two-day early voting period. "Lee is likely to vote in Seoul on the morning of the first day of early voting," stated Rep. Cho-Seung-rae, the DP's senior spokesperson, during a briefing at the party's headquarters.
Rep. Cho emphasized the significance of the election, describing it as a crucial evaluation of the past three years of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration. He highlighted the election's potential to decisively end the Dec. 3 insurrection and pave the way for recovery and growth.
Rep. Yun Ho-jung, who leads Lee Jae-myung's campaign team, pointed out the notable turnout in overseas voting, attributing it to the public sentiment against the "shamelessness of the far-right insurrection forces that caused the martial law crisis." The preliminary overseas voter turnout reached a historic 79.5 percent, the highest since absentee voting was introduced in the country's presidential and general elections in 2012.
The upcoming June 3 election aims to select a successor to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office following his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
