Seoul: The leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), Lee Jae-myung, on Wednesday emphasized the importance of efforts to deepen the alliance between Seoul and Washington as U.S. President Donald Trump began his second term. The remarks were made during Lee's meeting with acting U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Joseph Yun, at the National Assembly.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee stated, "We must strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance and firmly uphold our shared responsibilities as part of the free democratic bloc." He expressed gratitude to Washington for its support in safeguarding South Korea's democracy during a period of political instability following President Yoon Suk-yeol's short-lived martial law declaration on December 3.
As the Trump administration prepares to implement new foreign policy initiatives, Lee voiced hope for closer collaboration between Seoul and Washington to promote global peace, ensure stability in Northeast Asia, and deepen bilateral relations. Acting Ambassador Yun responded positively, stating that he looks forward to working to advance the bilateral alliance. He also expressed optimism that South Korea will overcome its political challenges and emerge stronger in the process.
