Uiseong: Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung visited wildfire-stricken North Gyeongsang Province on Thursday, pledging support for recovery efforts in the affected regions. Lee of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) visited Goun Temple in Uiseong, an ancient temple built in 681 during the Silla Dynasty (57 B.C.-A.D. 935) that was largely destroyed by the wildfires.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee stated, "We will do everything we can in the National Assembly so that the regions and facilities affected by the wildfires, including Goun Temple, do not have to worry about the funds (for recovery)." He emphasized that public funds collected through taxes should be utilized in challenging times like these to support recovery efforts.
Lee is scheduled to visit an evacuation shelter in Uiseong County and a memorial altar for the victims of the wildfires. He also plans to visit more shelters in Cheongsong and Yeongyang counties later in the day to comfort the displaced residents.
