Seoul: Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung on Wednesday criticized former President Yoon Suk Yeol for attending the screening of a documentary film concerning alleged election fraud.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon, who was previously removed from office over a failed martial law bid and is currently facing criminal charges for insurrection, has claimed that allegations of election fraud were among the reasons he declared the martial law decree. Yoon, who recently left the conservative People Power Party (PPP), made this appearance as his first public engagement since his ouster on April 4, aside from his appearances at the insurrection trial. This comes less than two weeks before the presidential election.
Lee questioned Yoon's rationale during a campaign rally in Incheon, asking reporters, "Did he not win his own election through that system?" He further challenged the logic behind Yoon's claims of a flawed election system, suggesting it would undermine Yoon's own election victory. Lee, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, remains the front-runner in the current campaign.
In response to the PPP's recent efforts to distance itself from Yoon, Lee remarked, "On Feb. 16, I said the PPP would disown Yoon within 100 days and it has happened." He dismissed these moves as mere public spectacle, asserting that Yoon and the PPP maintain close ties. Lee also predicted that the PPP would soon issue a dramatic apology, but expressed confidence that the public would not be easily misled by such actions.
