Seoul: With the 2025 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular season entering its final two weeks, the Hanwha Eagles are making a concerted effort to overtake the LG Twins for the top spot. The Eagles started September trailing the Twins by 5 1/2 games, but as the Twins began to falter, the Eagles closed the gap. They narrowed the deficit to 2 1/2 games on Saturday before slipping back to 3 1/2 games on Sunday, with 12 games remaining. The Eagles currently hold a record of 76-53-3, while the Twins are at 80-50-3.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Eagles are set to play on Monday due to a previous rainout, extending their schedule to eight consecutive days of play. After concluding a three-game series at home against the Kiwoom Heroes, the Eagles will head to Gwangju for a series against the Kia Tigers, followed by games in Suwon against the KT Wiz. Meanwhile, the Twins have a lighter schedule with only four games this week, facing the Wiz in Suwon and then hosting the Samsung Lions in Seoul.
Historically, teams reaching 80 wins first have been successful, winning the regular-season title 19 out of 20 times and the Korean Series 15 times. Despite this, the Eagles maintain a strong hold over third-place SSG Landers, leading by 8 1/2 games, making it unlikely they will drop from second place.
The race for the postseason is tight, with the Landers leading a competitive group vying for the remaining playoff spots. The Wiz, Lions, Giants, and Dinos are all within striking distance, while the Tigers, last year’s Korean Series champions, face diminishing chances of defending their title despite still having 13 games left to play.
