Seoul: Hanwha Eagles starter Ryan Weiss reached a significant milestone by surpassing 200 strikeouts during the 2025 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season on Thursday. This achievement marks the Eagles as the first team in the league’s history to have two pitchers achieve at least 200 strikeouts in a single season.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Weiss achieved this feat with seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings against the Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, bringing his total to 202 strikeouts for the season. His teammate, Cody Ponce, leads the league with 242 strikeouts, setting a new single-season record. The Eagles’ accomplishment is unprecedented in the KBO’s 43-year history.
Earlier this month, the Eagles also set a new record for the most strikeouts by a team in a single season, entering Thursday’s game with a total of 1,273 strikeouts. Drew Anderson of the SSG Landers is second in the league with 240 strikeouts, closely followed by Riley Thompson of the NC Dinos with 203. Historically, the
KBO has never witnessed more than two pitchers reaching 200 or more strikeouts in the same season.
Despite Weiss’ remarkable achievement, the game ended in disappointment for the Eagles. Weiss allowed six runs, two of which were unearned, on five hits, including two home runs, marking his shortest outing since July. The Eagles fell to a 7-0 defeat against the Bears.
