Seoul: The Hanwha Eagles emerged victorious in a gripping encounter against the LG Twins, securing a 6-5 win in extra innings during a highly anticipated clash between the top two teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). The Eagles' offense proved decisive, striking early and delivering a crucial blow late in the game.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Eagles initially built a strong 4-0 lead, but the Twins clawed their way back into the game. Chae Eun-seong's pivotal two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning ultimately sealed the win for the Eagles, much to the delight of the sellout crowd of 23,750 at Jamsil Baseball Stadium.
The LG Twins, despite the loss, maintain their position at the top of the KBO standings with a record of 34-19-1. Meanwhile, the Eagles, now 2.5 games behind, hold a record of 32-22-0, solidifying their position in second place.
The game began with a bang as Estevan Florial launched a solo home run off Twins' starter Coen Wynne. The Eagles continued their offensive onslaught in the third inning, scoring three more runs with two outs, thanks to key hits from Ha Ju-suk, Moon Hyun-bin, and Roh Si-hwan.
Eagles' starter Cody Ponce initially dominated the mound, retiring the first 10 batters. However, the Twins fought back with a solo home run by Kim Hyun-soo and another by Lee Young-bin, cutting the Eagles' lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Twins executed a double steal, setting the stage for Park Hae-min's game-tying single. Despite a chance to clinch victory in the ninth inning, the Twins were unable to capitalize, sending the game into extra innings.
Chae's decisive homer in the 11th inning provided the Eagles with a crucial lead. Although the Twins responded with a solo home run by Park Dong-won, they ultimately fell short, leaving the bases loaded as Cho Dong-uk struck out the final batter.
Ponce's performance included eight strikeouts, tying a KBO record for reaching 100 strikeouts in the fewest games, a feat previously achieved by his teammate Ryu Hyun-jin in 2012. Despite his impressive performance, Ponce's ERA increased to 1.94, leaving Drew Anderson of the SSG Landers in the lead with a 1.85 ERA.
Wynne's outing marked his final start in the KBO, allowing four runs on five hits over four innings. He was a temporary replacement for Elieser Hernandez, who is slated to return to action following his recovery from an injury.
