Ex-PPP Lawmaker and Political Broker Indicted in Election Nomination Scandal Probe.

Changwon: Kim Young-sun, a former five-term lawmaker of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), was indicted by prosecutors Tuesday, alongside Myung Tae-kyun, a political broker at the center of a growing election nomination scandal involving the ruling party. The Changwon District Prosecutors' Office announced the charges and subsequent detention of both individuals on allegations of violating the Political Funds Act.According to Yonhap News Agency, prosecutors allege that Kim provided Myung with 80.7 million won (US$57,540) between August 2022 and November 2023 through Kim's campaign finance officer. This financial exchange was purportedly in connection to securing Kim's candidacy for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections. Myung is believed to have leveraged his connections with prominent figures, including President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, to solicit bribes by offering nominations. The Political Funds Act expressly prohibits the exchange of political funds linked to candidate recommendations.In pursuit of evidence related to this influence-peddling scandal, prosecutors conducted a raid on the headquarters of the PPP in Seoul last week. Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon lodged a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office against Myung, Kim, and Kang Hye-kyung, a former aide to Kim. This complaint stems from allegations of attempted fraud involving the mayor and Kim Han-jung, a businessperson accused of financing public opinion polls Myung conducted for Oh during the 2021 Seoul mayoral election.Myung has claimed that he supported Mayor Oh with polling during the election, but the mayor has accused the trio of attempting to defraud him and his acquaintance, Kim Han-jung.
