Seoul: Han Dong-hoon, former leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), announced on Thursday that he will not participate in the party's forthcoming leadership election. Han communicated his decision via a Facebook post, emphasizing his commitment to political reform and the rejuvenation of the conservative party, which has experienced a significant decline in public support following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han stated, "I will not run in the August party leadership election." He expressed his intention to focus on grassroots politics, avoiding power struggles that he believes mislead party members and disillusion the South Korean populace. Han's declaration underscores his belief in returning political power to ordinary citizens and party members.
The PPP plans to elect its new leader at a national convention on August 22. As of early Thursday, four PPP politicians had announced their candidacies for the leadership position, including former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo, who previously ran as the party's presidential candidate in the June 3 election.
