Seoul: A former leader of the conservative People Power Party (PPP), Han Dong-hoon, will announce his presidential bid this week for the June 3 election, officials close to Han said Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han will hold a press conference Thursday at the National Assembly in Seoul to announce his bid for the upcoming presidential election. This election follows the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid, as noted in a press notice from Han's team.
Han, who was previously a prosecutor and one of Yoon's closest confidantes, expressed opposition to Yoon's martial law declaration immediately after it was announced in December. He led a group of PPP lawmakers to vote against the martial law decree at the National Assembly, just hours after its declaration.
After the National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon, Han stepped down as PPP leader. South Korea is set to hold a presidential election on June 3, following the Constitutional Court's decision last Friday to uphold Yoon's impeachment, thereby removing him from office.
