Jeju: Former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has emphasized the need for an "innovative" approach to encourage cooperation between the United States and China. This collaboration is deemed crucial for addressing significant global challenges such as climate change and regional conflicts.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ban delivered a video speech at the opening ceremony of the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity. He highlighted the importance of finding new ways to foster cooperation between these two global powers to tackle pressing issues like the climate crisis, sustainable development goals, public health threats, and regional conflicts. Ban pointed out that the relationship between the U.S. and China is pivotal and will significantly influence international politics in the long term.
Ban further advocated for global cooperation through multilateralism in technology, economy, politics, and culture. He called for innovation in governance to meet the public's expectations, including reforms within the U.N. and its Security Council. Ban emphasized the role of international collaboration in ensuring that innovation contributes to a peaceful, sustainable, and prosperous future.
Rosemary DiCarlo, the under secretary-general for U.N. political and peacebuilding affairs, also spoke at the forum. She highlighted the impact of innovation in supporting peace and preventing conflicts, stressing that it involves new mindsets, partnerships, and collaboration methods. DiCarlo underscored that innovation should facilitate inclusive peace rather than hinder it.
DiCarlo also addressed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, noting that it serves as a reminder of peace's fragility. She stated that the region's technological leadership could be leveraged positively. The United Nations remains committed to supporting efforts for sustainable peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy.
