Former PM Rejects PPP Candidate’s Offer to Serve as Election Campaign Chairman

Seoul: Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has turned down People Power Party (PPP) presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo's offer to serve as chairman of his campaign committee for the June 3 election, according to an aide to Han on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim approached Han to lead his campaign after Kim officially registered as the PPP's candidate on Sunday. This decision came after a week of internal party disputes aimed at unifying candidacies to present a stronger front against Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung.

Han had previously ended his brief and contentious bid to win the PPP's ticket when party members voted down a motion on Saturday that sought to replace Kim with Han. An aide to Han explained, "For the party to win the election, (Han) believes that the person running in the election should take on the role of campaign chairman."
