Seoul: The government and the ruling Democratic Party (DP) have announced plans to enhance their policy efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology across private firms, the public sector, and various societal sectors. This initiative aims to promote the utilization of AI under the AI Transformation initiative, as disclosed in a policy meeting held on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the government and DP intend to promote the opening of public data, a move highlighted by Rep. Han Jeoung-ae, the DP's top policymaker. The discussions also led to a decision to ease certain penalties, particularly those regulations that do not align with global standards or pertain to breach of trust issues.
The government has committed to identifying key projects within emerging industries, offering comprehensive support packages that include financial aid, tax benefits, and resources for research and development. Additionally, the DP plans to support these efforts through legislative measures aimed at expanding access to public data.
Rep. Han noted that the DP will establish its own task force to work on "rationalizing" existing regulations. Furthermore, both parties are set to advocate for an increase in the special budget allocated for regional balanced development, aiming to surpass 10 trillion won to enhance regional tourism.
Since taking office in June, President Lee Jae Myung has consistently emphasized his ambition to position South Korea among the world's top three AI powerhouses.
