Daejeon: The government announced plans to expedite the restoration of online services disrupted by a recent fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) during the Chuseok holiday period. Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung emphasized the urgency of the situation at a government meeting, highlighting that only 17.8 percent of the 647 affected services have been restored since the fire occurred in Daejeon, approximately 140 kilometers south of Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Yun assured the public that the government would use the seven-day holiday as a critical period for recovery efforts. This period includes Chuseok, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day and is seen as a window of opportunity to address the outage. Yun stated that the government would take comprehensive measures to avoid any interruption in administrative services and safety management during this time.
Efforts are underway to coordinate with the presidential office and financial authorities to secure necessary funds for NIRS’ restoration. This includes relocating damaged systems to an NIRS branch in Daegu. While acknowledging that complete normalization of the computer network may take time, Yun outlined plans to prioritize systems essential to daily life and develop separate management systems for them.
