Seoul: The government has officially announced June 3 as the date for the upcoming presidential election, following the impeachment and subsequent ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision was confirmed during a Cabinet meeting, just four days after the Constitutional Court upheld Yoon's impeachment. The impeachment was a result of Yoon's controversial imposition of martial law in December, which led to his removal from office. In light of the upcoming election, June 3 has also been declared a temporary public holiday.
Acting President Han Duck-soo addressed the nation during the meeting, expressing his remorse over the political turmoil that has unfolded over the past four months. "I sincerely apologize for causing confusion and worries to the people, and for having to face this regrettable situation of a presidential vacancy," Han stated. He urged the nation to focus on recovery and unity, emphasizing the importance of moving forward and strengthening the Republic of Korea.
