Government Tentatively Schedules Presidential Election for June 3

Seoul: The government has tentatively decided to hold a presidential election on June 3 to select the successor of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. This decision is expected to be confirmed at a Cabinet meeting this week, an official disclosed on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Acting President Han Duck-soo plans to finalize the election schedule during a Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday. A senior government official emphasized that due to the importance of the matter and the potential designation of the election day as a temporary public holiday, the decision will be formally approved during the meeting.

The announcement comes after the Constitutional Court removed Yoon from office last Friday over his unsuccessful attempt at martial law. Consequently, a presidential election must occur within 60 days of this removal. If the proposed schedule is confirmed, candidates will have until May 11 to register, and the official campaign period will commence on May 12.

Additionally, the law mandates that any public servant intending to run for president must resign at least 30 days before the election, setting May 4 as the resignation deadline. Notably, the newly elected president will assume office immediately following the election results, foregoing a transition team.
