Seoul: The government announced plans on Wednesday to utilize all available transportation resources nationwide to reduce public inconvenience due to an impending strike by unionized railway workers set to commence this week. Unionized workers from Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) are poised to initiate an indefinite strike starting Thursday, pressing for increased wages and a larger workforce.According to Yonhap News Agency, the strike is anticipated to disrupt the operations of high-speed KTX trains, regular train services throughout the country, and subway services in the capital region. In response, Park Sang-woo, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, has directed authorities to optimize the use of express and inter-city buses, taxis, and domestic flights to alleviate inconvenience for the public.The ministry disclosed plans to deploy extra personnel for KTX and metropolitan subway services during peak commuting hours to better serve passengers. Additionally, the government intends to run a 24-hour joint transportation task force in collaboration with relevant agencies and local governments until the strike concludes.Meanwhile, KORAIL has also prepared countermeasures against the planned strike, including establishing a 24-hour emergency team and deploying officials experienced in operating KTX and subway trains. Customer service enhancements, such as sending mobile notifications and station announcements, have also been planned to assist passengers.
