Sejong: The government has launched an interagency recovery support team in response to days of heavy rains and landslides that have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals across the nation. Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung announced this initiative while leading a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in Sejong, emphasizing a shift from immediate response to recovery efforts.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the interior ministry, along with other relevant ministries and the affected local governments, will mobilize all available resources to conduct swift emergency restoration work. Yun stated that the government plans to quickly assess the extent of the damage and recommend to President Lee Jae Myung the designation of severely affected areas as special disaster zones.
In a separate directive, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok instructed Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung to visit the southern county of Sancheong to develop support measures. Additionally, the prime minister directed the interior minister to visit the impacted regions on Monday to engage with residents and devise detailed support plans.
The heavy rains and landslides, which began on Wednesday, have claimed at least 10 lives, with nine others reported missing. The county of Sancheong, in particular, has been severely affected, accounting for six of the deaths and seven of the missing individuals.
