Seoul: Hana Financial Group reported a significant increase in its second-quarter net profit, reaching a new quarterly high due to a notable rise in non-interest income. The group's net profit for the April-June period reached 1.18 trillion won (US$859.7 million), marking a 13.3 percent increase from the previous year, as disclosed in a regulatory filing. This achievement sets a new record for quarterly net profit, excluding a one-time gain in the first quarter of 2012 from the acquisition of Korea Exchange Bank.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the earnings surpassed market expectations, with analysts' average net profit estimate at 1.11 trillion won, based on a survey by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency. The operating profit rose 9.9 percent from the previous year to 1.49 trillion won, while revenue increased by 21.6 percent to 23.97 trillion won.
For the first half of the year, Hana Financial's cumulative net profit climbed 11.2 percent year-on-year to 2.3 trillion won, marking the highest first-half result on record. The record profit was attributed to a 2.5 percent increase in interest income to 4.49 trillion won and a 10 percent rise in non-interest income to 1.39 trillion won during the second quarter.
The group's net interest margin, which measures the difference between interest received and paid, stood at 1.73 percent in the second quarter, compared to 1.69 percent in the previous year. Additionally, flagship Hana Bank achieved a record net profit of 2.09 trillion won in the first half of 2025, reflecting a 19.1 percent increase from the same period in the previous year.
In an effort to enhance shareholder value, Hana Financial Group announced plans to repurchase and cancel 200 billion won worth of its own stocks.
