Oslo: Hanwha Ocean Co., a leading South Korean shipbuilder, announced its collaboration with Norway's ship classification society DNV through a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at advancing fuel tank technology.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the MOU was formalized during the Nor-Shipping 2025 conference, a prominent biennial maritime event currently taking place in Oslo. The agreement is centered on enhancing high manganese steel cargo tank independent type-B (MCTIB) technology.
The partnership will focus on increasing the vapor pressure limit of MCTIB fuel tanks to improve "cold ironing." This method allows ships to utilize external electrical power while docked, thereby reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.
MCTIB technology is instrumental in minimizing boil-off gas (BOG) and improving transport efficiency in fuel tanks for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and container ships.
In another initiative at the conference, Hanwha Ocean signed two additional MOUs with the Korean Register to collaborate on the development of an eco-friendly, large-scale ammonia carrier.
