Ulsan: HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co. (HD KSOE) announced Tuesday that it has secured a significant 2.4 trillion-won (US$1.76 billion) contract to construct eight container ships for an Asian shipping company, with delivery slated by 2028.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the 15,900 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container carriers will be built at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. shipyard in Ulsan, located 308 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The client for this substantial order has not been disclosed, as per the company's press release.
The new vessels will feature liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel engines, allowing them to run on both LNG and traditional marine fuel. This design aligns with the shipping industry's shift towards more environmentally friendly practices.
"With stricter environmental regulations on maritime emissions, shipping companies are placing more orders for eco-friendly, fuel-efficient vessels. HD KSOE will lead the decarbonization of the oceans with its differentiated green shipbuilding technologies," the company stated.
HD KSOE, a subholding entity of the shipbuilding-to-machinery conglomerate HD Hyundai, operates alongside three affiliates, including Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co.
