A committee of the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution recognizing the importance of trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the United States and Japan on Friday, in a sign of congressional support for three-way engagement.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee endorsed the resolution that encourages “ever greater” cooperation among the three countries across diplomatic, economic, security and informational domains. It was submitted by Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-VA) and 22 other lawmakers.
The resolution commended the “extraordinary” leadership of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in taking the initiative to repair bilateral relations, while acknowledging improved ties between Seoul and Tokyo have enabled “greater ambition” in trilateral cooperation.
It also recognized the “critical” importance to U.S. interests in its treaty alliances with South Korea and Japan.
Cooperation between the U.S. and its core Asian allies culminated in the first-ever s
tandalone trilateral summit among Yoon, Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden at Camp David in Maryland in August. It produced a series of agreements, including the “Commitment to Consult” each other in the event of a shared threat.
